Back to news list A Newbridge-based contract electronics manufacturer has launched a new apprenticeship scheme to offer young people in the area employment opportunities in manufacturing. Karl Higgins and Ieuan Scott are the first apprentices to join the 220 strong team at Axiom Manufacturing Services, helping to kick-start their careers in the electronics industry. Karl, 18, from Abertillery, joins the company with experience gained from the first year of an apprenticeship in mechanical engineering already under his belt, and an NVQ level 2 in performing engineering operations.. Karl also recently completed his Mechanical Ordinary National Certificate (ONC) and will be working towards his apprenticeship in engineering at Axiom. Ieuan, also 18, from Surfed, joins the company as an apprentice toolmaker with qualifications in motor vehicle repair and motor sport engineering from Cross Keys and Lacklam colleges. Karl said; “I found this apprenticeship through my learning provider and have settled in really well. I am now working towards completing an HNC in electrical engineering, and an NVQ level three in performing engineering operations in test engineering. “At the moment I am undertaking a secondary induction which involves me observing the operations of all the various work sections at Axiom. Working closely with the operations director has inspired me to one day become an operations director myself. Ieuan adds: “I was keen to join Axiom as they have such a strong profile in the local area, and are widely recognised as a quality international electronics manufacturer with a very talented workforce. I am keen to develop my skills as a toolmaker and the team at Axiom is extremely supportive in helping me do this.” HR manager Tina Dunstan said: “At Axiom we have always been keen to employ local people like Ieuan and Karl, and we strive to play a key part in the development of future skilled workers for the electronic sector. The launch of this apprentice scheme is a first for Axiom and also a great opportunity for us to do even more of this. “We are recognised as an Investor in People employer, an accolade given to businesses that are strongly focused on their team and their needs and development throughout the wider business, and are constantly investing in and supporting the progression of our employees. “We look forward to seeing these two new additions to the team grow and develop their skills as they play a key role within Axiom, helping the company to maintain its excellent reputation within both the manufacturing and electronics industries.”CIPR Cymru Wales Outstanding PR Consultancy Gold Award Winner 2008
